About Howells
Howells was laid out in 1886, when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad pushed its line into northern Colfax County, and railroad officials named the stop for James Smith Howell, a local surveyor, farmer and teacher. For half a century the post office spelled it Howell, until the final s became official in 1937. Farm families built a solid brick Center Street, including the 1900 Baumert & Bogner hardware and furniture store with its pressed-metal cornice, now on the National Register of Historic Places, and the town's dance hall drew notice across the country in the early 1900s; today's steel Howells Ballroom, raised in 1964, still holds 600 people for festivals and wedding receptions. Crops, cattle and hogs keep the area going, and grain bins rise just behind the storefronts. About 560 people live here now, cheering on the Howells-Dodge Jaguars, gathering at the community park's disc golf course and the Prairie Winds Wildlife Sanctuary, and looking back at Bobcats Park downtown, where a sign lists every Howells High School state title.
