About Hull
Hull's story starts in 1872, when the first settlers put down roots on the open prairie of northwest Sioux County. The little settlement answered to Pattersonville, after John G. Patterson, and then briefly to Winland before taking the name of Iowa congressman John A. T. Hull in the 1880s, and it became an incorporated city in May 1886. A public school followed close behind, sending out its first graduating class in 1891, and in 1959 Hull joined neighboring Boyden to form one district whose junior and senior high still stand in town. Neighbors raised a public library from donated books, organizing in 1954, opening in 1957 and moving into a new building in 2006, and today its Lego, art, cooking and story-time clubs keep children busy all week. The co-op grain elevator and the water tower by Highway 18 mark the skyline, a veterans memorial anchors the city park at the north end of Main Street, and a hometown candy company that began importing Warheads sour candy in 1993 gives this town of about 2,400 a sweet claim to fame.
