About Humboldt
Humboldt began in 1863 as Springvale, a settlement Stephen Harris Taft laid out beside the springs of the West Fork of the Des Moines River, dreaming of a tree-filled town of schools, churches and thinkers. The town soon took the name of the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, and Taft's hopes took shape in a sawmill, a grist mill, unusually wide streets and a small college that opened its doors in 1872. Townspeople raised a limestone Carnegie library with a columned porch in 1909, quarried from land that is now Taft Park, and Taft's own stone-and-clapboard house from 1864 still stands on 1st Avenue North. In John Brown Park, Father Paul Dobberstein, the builder of the Grotto of the Redemption, set a stone Liberty Fountain in 1918, and along the river the Reasoner Dam, a pedestrian bridge and the Cottonwood Trail draw walkers today. Home to about 4,800 people, Humboldt still fills its calendar with church suppers, Kiwanis Christmasland and city-wide trick-or-treating.
