About Humphrey
Humphrey was platted in 1880, when the Omaha, Niobrara and Black Hills Railroad reached this stretch of Platte County, and it took its name from Humphrey, New York, the old hometown of its first postmaster. Catholic families in the new railroad town petitioned for a church of their own, laid a cornerstone in December 1882 and dedicated a little frame church the next July. By 1894 the parish had outgrown it and raised the Romanesque St. Francis of Assisi Church, whose 172-foot steeple is among the tallest in Nebraska; residents asked for a town clock in it in 1899, and parishioners have rebuilt that steeple after one lightning strike after another. In 1902 the town put up a red-brick City Hall with arched fire-engine doors, now on the National Register. Today about 857 people live in Humphrey, where the steeple and water tower rise above the cropland, Main Street still has its brick storefronts, and two schools, the public Humphrey Bulldogs and Humphrey St. Francis, fill the calendar.
