About Huxley
Huxley became a town on August 27, 1902, and took its name from Thomas Henry Huxley, the British biologist. It sits in Story County, on the edge of the Ames metro area, and by the 2020 census it was home to 4,244 people. Its library started small in November 1972, with about 2,000 books in the basement of City Hall on Main Street. As the town grew, the library moved four times before landing in 2003 on the top floor of the 3C's building, where it also serves as the Ballard Middle School library and now holds more than 40,000 items. Families know the Ballard Bombers, the late-August Huxley Prairie Festival that the city, parks and rec, the fire department and local churches put on together, and fall traditions like the free Turkey Trot, with races from 5 yards to a mile and cider and donuts afterward.
