About Ida Grove
Ida Grove's story starts with John H. Moorehead, one of Ida County's first two settler families in 1856, who spent seven years raising a twelve-room stagecoach inn beside the Western Stage Line route; for a time it was also the county's courthouse, post office, church and school. The first town grew up on the north bank of the Maple River in 1871, but when the Chicago & North Western's Maple Valley branch was laid along the south side in 1877, Ida Grove picked up and moved to meet it, incorporating the next spring. The county built its brick courthouse here in 1883, crowned with a 110-foot tower, and livestock man Alvin Bell finished his ornate Queen Anne house on Quimby Street in 1895. In 1982 the hometown Gomaco company began building old-time streetcars here, sending replica trolleys to cities from Lowell to Portland, Memphis and Tampa. Today about 2,050 people call the county seat home, where the Moorehead inn still stands on its original spot in Moorehead Pioneer Park and the purple-and-black OABCIG Falcons keep the calendar full of games, concerts and school musicals.
