About Inglewood
Inglewood sits on Highway 77 just north of the Platte River, with a dike for its southern edge and Fremont only a mile up the road. Settlers farmed its rich soil for watermelons, cantaloupe, asparagus and sweet potatoes, and the produce rode to Omaha markets and Fremont stores, with one grower known as Nebraska's Melon King shipping by the railcar load. The place was platted in 1918 and named for Inglewood, California. When Fremont wanted to apply its zoning rules, neighbors asked to join the city, were turned down, and incorporated their own village on July 22, 1959. Since then the village has added water, sewer, paved streets, a village hall, a park with a tennis court and shelter, and a volunteer fire department. Neighbors still gather for an annual picnic, a children's Halloween party, and the firemen's dance and dinner.
