About Iowa Falls
Iowa Falls grew up where the Iowa River slices through a deep limestone gorge, and its first settlers in the 1850s argued over calling the place Rocksylvania before a post office under the name Iowa Falls settled the matter; the town was laid out in 1855 and its plat recorded in 1856. The railroad reached town in 1866, and businessman Eugene Ellsworth went on to shape much of what followed: he founded the college that still bears his name in 1890, built the Metropolitan Opera House that opened to a crowd of more than 800 in December 1899, and donated the lot for the Carnegie library dedicated in 1904. Graceful concrete arch bridges from the 1920s and 1930s still carry River Street and Washington Avenue over the river, and the Mission-style band shell in Estes Park, raised as a community project in 1931, has hosted concerts and dances ever since. Right in that same park, the Popcorn Stand has been serving since 1948, the oldest one still running in Iowa. Today about 5,100 people live in the Scenic City, where the Met still shows movies downtown and the Chamber and Lions Club light up a Festival of Lights every holiday season.
