About Jefferson
Jefferson's story starts in 1849, when Truman and Mary Davis came up the Raccoon River valley with six children and a few animals and built the first cabin in what became Greene County; a few years later the young settlement was made the county seat. Farm families, the railroad after the Civil War, and a busy square of shops and banks grew it into a market town, and in 1869 scientists from far away came here to watch a total solar eclipse. The old Lincoln Highway still runs past the Beaux-Arts Greene County Courthouse, where a bronze Abraham Lincoln has stood on the lawn since 1918. Rising beside it is the Mahanay Memorial Bell Tower, dedicated in 1966, whose glass elevator carries visitors up to a deck that looks over five counties, and whose full carillon was finally funded for its 50th birthday. Today about 4,200 people call Jefferson home; the town where pollster George Gallup grew up in an octagon house still gathers every June for the Bell Tower Festival parade and street dance, and each October children trick-or-treat around the downtown square.
