About Kalona
Amish families began farming the rolling land around Kalona in 1846, the year Iowa became a state, and their settlement is still the oldest in Iowa and one of the largest west of the Mississippi. The town itself came later: on August 6, 1879 the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway laid out a stop on its new branch line, and a Mr. Myers suggested the name Kalona, after his bull. Shops built on farm trade, handmade furniture and quilts grew up downtown, where more than 40 quilt-block patterns are now set right into the sidewalks of the self-styled Quilt Capitol of Iowa. Neighbors love the Kalona Historical Village, begun in 1969 when the old train depot was moved there, which now gathers a dozen historic buildings, a one-room school and the Mennonite museum, and the library that 200 volunteers carried across town in 2005 into a new building wrapped in basket-weave brick. Today about 2,630 people live here, and the year runs from Saturday farmers markets and Kalona Days in June to Christmas in Kalona on the first Saturday of December.
