About Kearney
The city is named for Fort Kearny, founded in 1848 to protect westbound emigrants; the extra 'e' crept in through repeated misspelling by postal workers. In the late 1880s and early 1890s boosters built a canal, an electric street railway, a five-story opera house and a cotton mill, and the population passed 10,000 by 1892.
