About Kenesaw
Kenesaw began in June 1871, when four men claimed the section where the Burlington planned its next stop and one of them slept his first rainy nights under an upturned wagon box; the line arrived in 1872, and the town took the name of the Civil War battle of Kennesaw Mountain, its avenues named for land company men and its streets for trees. Preacher, teacher and editor A.D. Williams came by covered wagon that August, became the first postmaster and started the Kenesaw Times, and the women of Kenesaw formed Adams County's first suffrage group here in 1882. Grain elevators, a flour mill and four passenger trains a day made 1915 to 1930 the boom years, and Kenesaw Motor Company, founded in 1921, is still the oldest business in town. In 2004 the village offered free home lots to anyone who would build within a year, and seven of fifteen were claimed in three weeks. Today about 900 people live here between Hastings, Grand Island and Kearney, with the Blue Devils' school at the east edge of town, a pool and city park, a memorial on Smith Avenue whose old fire bell once called out the volunteers, and Wasenek Weekend every August.
