About Kimball

Kimball began around 1870 as Antelopeville, a Union Pacific stop where steam engines took on coal and water amid the pronghorn country, and in 1885 it took the name of railroad manager Thomas Lord Kimball. Oil found in 1951 started what the city calls a second frontier, with 28 producers inside city limits at one point. Then, starting in 1960, the Air Force dug an Atlas missile site south of town and built Minuteman launch sites across the surrounding farm country, and Kimball grew to its largest census count. Panorama Point, Nebraska's highest ground at 5,424 feet, sits 33 miles to the southwest, and every September the town still holds Farmers Day, first held in 1923 with a free lunch during a drought.
