About Kingsley
Kingsley began a mile west as Quorn, a village shaped by English brothers Frederick and William Close, who ran big farms there and trained young Englishmen in American farming. When the railroad was surveyed to the east instead, the businesses packed up and moved to the new town laid out by Nahum Kingsley of Vermont, which is why many streets carry Vermont names. Kingsley was incorporated in 1884 and grew into a farm-town hub in the Loess Hills. Folks here are fond of their black squirrels, which have been the town's trademark since a 1959 Diamond Jubilee postcard, and of the house on West 3rd where young Herbert Hoover lived with his grandmother. Today the library and city hall share one building, the Loring Aquatic Center anchors summer, and the Kingsley-Pierson Panthers draw the crowds on winter nights.
