About Knoxville
Knoxville got its start in 1845, when two commissioners chose a level, wooded spot close to the middle of the new Marion County for its seat and named it for Revolutionary War general Henry Knox; the two main streets, Robinson and Montgomery, still carry the commissioners' own names. Railroads reached town in the mid-1870s and coal mines opened at nearby Flagler and even a few blocks from the courthouse, and the little village grew into the county's working hub. On the square, the sandstone courthouse finished in 1896 climbs to a four-faced clock and an eight-sided spire, keeping company with a Civil War soldier atop a granite shaft and a memorial to Dixie Cornell Gebhardt, the Knoxville woman who designed Iowa's flag. Out at the Marion County Fairgrounds, a half-mile dirt oval that first hosted horse races in 1878 has made Knoxville the Sprint Car Capital of the World, with the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum standing right beside the track. Today about 7,600 people live here, a few miles south of Lake Red Rock and Elk Rock State Park.
