About La Porte City
La Porte City was laid out in 1855 in Black Hawk County, and one of its founders gave it the name of his old hometown, La Porte, Indiana. In 1912 the interurban railroad from Waterloo pushed through toward Cedar Rapids and left behind a tidy brick Georgian Revival depot, which the town bought in 1928 and has used as its city hall ever since. Neighbors have a habit of building things together here: the Lions Club started the library in 1945 with 100 books and a $1,000 pledge, and local FFA students founded a museum in 1970 inside the old 1876 fire station and jailhouse on Chestnut Street. Volunteers later spent four years restoring a Main Street building as the museum's home, and today its pancake breakfast and holiday craft bazaar fill the calendar each fall. About 2,300 people live in La Porte City now, where the freshly renovated public library on Main Street reopened in February 2026 with a makerspace called The Forge.
