About Lake City
Lake City got its start in 1856 and borrowed its name from nearby Lake Creek, which is why the welcome sign cheerfully admits the town has everything but a lake. The railroad arrived in 1881, and the Toledo & North Western soon put its repair shops and then a division headquarters here, so the town grew fast around its square. Neighbors built for the long haul: an Italianate brick Central School from the 1880s, a 90-foot water standpipe raised in 1893, a Carnegie library that opened in 1910, and a Community Memorial Building honoring those who served in three wars. A few miles south, James Marsh's 1914 rainbow arch bridge still curves over the North Raccoon River inside a county park. Today the square keeps a volunteer-run Capri Theatre with $2 movies, Dobson Pipe Organ Builders crafts instruments in town, and Stewart Memorial Community Hospital is the largest employer.
