About Lamoni
Lamoni sits on good farmland just above the Missouri line, and its story starts with a plan: in 1870 Joseph Smith III had the Order of Enoch buy more than 3,000 acres here for a town of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The town was laid out beside the new Chicago, Burlington and Quincy tracks in 1879, the church moved its headquarters here the next year, and in 1895 it founded Graceland, the college that still fills the town with concerts, plays and ball games. Smith's 1881 home, Liberty Hall, has been a home for the aged, part of a dairy and a CCC office, and is now a museum restored to his day. Lamoni is also where two church members, Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg, started the Supply Store in 1930, the chain that grew into Hy-Vee. Today about 2,000 people call it home, gathering for the Volunteer Fair, the kids' fishing derby in June and Untold Lamoni Stories at Graceland's Carol Hall.
