About Laurel
Laurel grew up where two railroads crossed in southern Cedar County: a branch line reached the area in 1883, and when the Pacific Short Line from Sioux City cut across it in 1890, William M. Martin and a few investors mapped a new town at the junction. They first called it Claramont Junction, but that sounded too much like the nearby post office at Claramont, so Martin named it Laurel after his eldest daughter, Laura. A temporary depot was the first building in February 1892, Everett and Waite moved their store and lumberyard over that April, and Claramont soon emptied out while Laurel incorporated in 1893 with more than 200 people. Its first brick building, a store with an upstairs meeting room people called the opera house, went up on Second Street in 1894, and the Laurel Chamber Community Club has been organizing the town's business life since 1902. Today about 975 people live here, and the City Park still keeps the 1892 Maun home and the Morning Glory schoolhouse beside the playground and campsites. A rebuilt Main Street, a community center that opened in 2022, and the new home of the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears give the town plenty of places to gather, from Ag Days in June to the Night of Lights before Christmas.
