About Laurens
Laurens was platted in 1881 and took its name from Henry and John Laurens, a father and son from Charleston who backed the colonies during the Revolution. The young town weathered a hard blizzard in 1888 and a big fire along Main Street in 1898, and kept building anyway. Early in the 1900s Andrew Carnegie's library grants reached across the country, and Laurens turned out to be the smallest town to receive one. That Carnegie building now sits in the city park as the Pocahontas County Historical Society Museum, which opened in 1977. Today about 1,264 neighbors share crushed-limestone trails, a campground and disc golf course at Sportsman's Park, and a brand new aquatic center that opened in 2025, and the town is also remembered as Alvin Straight's hometown, the 1999 film The Straight Story.
