About LeClaire
LeClaire grew up on land once held by Antoine LeClaire, the multilingual interpreter of French Canadian and Potawatomi roots who also helped found Davenport; settlers arrived in the 1830s and the town incorporated in 1855. It sits at the top of the rocky Upper Rapids, so the river pilots who steered steamboats through them made their homes here, alongside lumber mills, limestone quarries and the Van Sant boatyards. William F. Cody, the showman the world came to know as Buffalo Bill, was born here in 1846, and the riverfront Buffalo Bill Museum now shelters the Lone Star, an 1868 wooden paddlewheel towboat that is a National Historic Landmark. Up the hill, the brick storefronts and Italianate homes of Cody Road form a historic district that filled with new shops and cafes after a downtown makeover that began in 2007. Today about 4,710 neighbors call it home, pulling a rope across the Mississippi against Port Byron at Tugfest each August and watching bald eagles fish below Lock and Dam 14 in winter.
