About Leigh

Leigh grew up around a handful of Civil War veterans who took up homestead land here in 1872, and it carries the maiden name of the wife of one of them, Mary Margaret Leigh Walling, an early postmistress. A branch railroad arrived in 1886 and pulled the businesses from the old town toward the tracks; the village incorporated in March 1887 with some 210 residents, churches and a school. Neighbors have kept things going ever since: a volunteer fire department started in 1907 (its 1929 Model A still rolls in parades), a fastpitch softball tournament that began in 1949, and Memorial Day services held since 1925. The Colfax County Fair moved here in 1922 and marked its 100th year in 2021. Today about 435 people live in Leigh, off Highway 91 between Norfolk and Columbus, with one school under one roof, Centennial Lake for fishing and kayaking, and the 1875 House of Yesteryear Museum on Main Street.
