About Lenox
Lenox sits on the high divide of southwest Iowa, where the railroad cut through in the early 1870s and a town was platted on the summit. Folks have long told two tales about the name: a thin team of resting oxen, or a railroad executive's daughter. The first schoolhouse had just two rooms, and a great fire in 1884 swept away 42 businesses, yet Main Street was built again. The Lenox Hotel is on the National Register, the old depot still draws preservation fans, and the rodeo grounds host the Lenox Rodeo each year. Today about 1,300 neighbors share a pool, a nine-hole golf course, a library and a school that has served the town since 1878.
