About Leon
Leon began as a county-seat fight: Decatur City kept getting cut off by floods, so the county voted to move its seat east of the Little River, and when the old town would not let go, the records were hauled over by ox wagon after dark. The new settlement was first called Independence, then South Independence, until in 1855 a legislator and veteran named W.H. Cheevers won the name Leon, honoring the army surgeon David Camden de Leon; the town incorporated in 1858 and grew as a shipping point on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. Leon's merchants organized a Board of Trade in 1888, with thirty businessmen signing on within fifteen minutes, and a Commercial Club followed in 1907 that lives on as today's chamber. Five courthouses came before today's: one blew down in a windstorm before it was finished, one burned with the county records, and in 1876 safecrackers' explosives blew out a wall of the fifth without opening the safe; the brick Renaissance Revival courthouse with its central clock tower went up in 1908. About 1,800 people live here now, where Highways 2 and 69 meet a few minutes from Interstate 35, with Little River Lake at the edge of town, a rodeo many times named Iowa's best, and the Fourth of July celebrated on the square.
