About Lisbon
Lisbon was platted in 1851 on the prairie east of Cedar Rapids and took its name from the capital of Portugal. Its merchants built a solid brick Main Street, including the 1875 Wink and Hauser building, whose upstairs hall once hosted the city council, traveling musicians and literary clubs and still shows signatures penciled on its walls that first year. In 1909 the town threw its first Sauerkraut Days downtown, and every August since it has drawn neighbors back for brats, free kraut, bathtub races and street dances. The library has its own good story: the sixteen seniors of the class of 1936 pulled toy wagons door to door collecting books, and today it fills the Wink and Hauser storefront with Heritage Hall concerts and recitals upstairs. Volunteers spent two years documenting downtown until the Lisbon Main Street Historic District joined the National Register in 2019, alongside the bracketed Stuckslager House and the 1899 Methodist church that townspeople funded a quarter at a time. Now about 2,200 people live here beside Mount Vernon, cheering on the Lisbon Lions.
