About Lone Tree
Lone Tree grew up around a single giant elm that stood on a rise south of town and guided travelers across the open prairie, and the name stuck when the town was platted in 1872. Local lore says the tree was so broad that buffalo once grazed beneath it, and when Dutch elm disease finally took it in the 1960s, neighbors saved its wood for a sign marking the hill. The town was incorporated in 1890 and sits along Iowa Highway 22, between Iowa City and Muscatine. Today a preschool-through-12th-grade school under one roof ties families together, and the library doubles as the school's media center. A three-story house holds the historical museum's country kitchen and store, a barbershop and a handmade miniature farm, and the year turns around Fall Festival, Food Truck Fridays, Party in the Park and Winterfest.
