About Loup City
Loup City grew up beside the Middle Loup River, whose rich valley soil and steady water drew the first settlers in the 1860s, and when Sherman County was organized in 1873 the town became its seat. Its first courthouse burned on the very day it was dedicated, so the county built again in brick, and in 1921 it opened the tan brick courthouse with terra cotta trim that still anchors the square on O Street. Nearby, the red brick Frederick Hotel has been welcoming guests since 1913, and the Classical Revival Carnegie library was dedicated in 1917. Generations of Polish families gave Loup City its proud title of 'Polish Capital of Nebraska': a white eagle is painted right in the downtown intersection, and every June Polish Days brings a parade, polka music and plenty of Polish food. Today about 1,050 people live here, a few miles from the boating, fishing and camping of Sherman Reservoir, with a Halloween parade of costumed kids downtown and Christmas Cheer in December.
