About Lyons
Lyons traces its start to the Fourth of July 1866, when settlers broke the first furrow in the fertile soil of the Logan Valley; a water-powered flour mill rose on Logan Creek three years later, and a brickyard opened in 1878 whose bricks still make up much of the town. The railroad arrived in 1881, and in 1884 the village incorporated under the name of Waldo Lyon, on whose land the lots were platted and whose deed famously barred the sale of liquor in town. For a few heady years after 1891 the kite-shaped trotting track just west of town drew record-breaking horses and big purses, and later generations made Lyons a capital of bluegrass sod, celebrated with a Fourth of July festival and the biggest fireworks around. Visitors today notice the brick-paved Main Street, the maroon-and-white water tower spelling out LYONS, and the Storefront Theater, a false shop front whose facade folds down over the sidewalk to become a stage with pull-out bleachers. About 800 people live here now, swimming in the pool that fills the old clay pit, reading at the library on North Main and cheering on the Lyons-Decatur Northeast Cougars.
