This week in Madrid
About Madrid
Madrid started as Swede Point: Swedish families arrived in 1846, and in 1852 Anna Dalander recorded the town plat on land she owned, with the name changing to Madrid in 1857 and the town voting to incorporate in 1883. Coal built it from there, first as a winter job beside summer farming and then as a real industry, with the Scandia Coal Company digging more than 100,000 tons a year by 1914 and Italian and Croatian families coming in the 1920s and 1930s to work the mines. That history still shows: the Madrid Historical Museum on West Second Street fills four connected buildings, including the town's first city hall and fire station from 1893, and you can walk through a replica of an underground coal mine in its basement. Just outside town, the High Trestle Trail crosses the Des Moines River on a bridge 13 stories high and almost half a mile long, lit up at night with a design that echoes the view down a mine shaft. Today about 2,800 people call Madrid home, cheer on the Madrid Tigers, and have the 170-acre Iowa Arboretum and Gardens, with its treehouse village, right down the road.
