About Malcolm
Malcolm sprang up after the railroad opened this part of Nebraska in 1873, when Malcolm and Emma Showers filed a plat in October 1877; the village took its name from Malcolm Showers, who also built its first church and served as its first Methodist minister. Early years were hard, with a prairie fire between Middle and Elk creeks in 1880 followed by a diphtheria outbreak, but a creamery, shops, a hotel and a bank followed, and the Malcolm Messenger kept everyone up on the gossip from 1891 to 1934. The village incorporated in June 1915. School has long been the heart of town: the first two-room high school of 1917 grew into today's PreK-12 campus, finished around 1999, beside Westfall Elementary. Lincoln Street is the main stretch, and Branched Oak and Pawnee lakes sit a short drive away.
