About Manly

Manly began as a railroad crossroads: two lines met here in the late 1870s, and the little stop was called Manly Junction after a freight agent. In 1912 the Rock Island made it a division point, with a roundhouse and shops that put several hundred people to work, and the town swelled past 1,400 within a decade. A Rock Island caboose and engine now stand beside Highway 9 as a salute to those years, and the town still throws its Railroad/Ag Days party each summer, with a parade and kids' games at Bosworth Park. Visitors can stop in at the Manly Junction Railroad Museum, and families swim at the aquatic center. Today about 1,250 people live at the crossing of Highways 65 and 9, sixteen miles below the Minnesota line, and the trains still roll through.
