About Manning
Manning did not grow up beside a river or a bluff. It sprang up where two railroads crossed in the early 1880s, on open ground that had been swampy hunting country, and it took its name from Orlando Harrison Manning, a lieutenant governor of Iowa. German families shaped the town, and you can still see it in the cobblestone-lined Main Street and the Bavarian touches on the storefronts. In the 1990s the town carried a 1660 German house-barn across the ocean and rebuilt it, and that became Hausbarn Heritage Park, with a historic church, a farmstead and a Freedom Rock. Kinderfest and Weihnachtsfest keep the old traditions going. Today about 1,455 neighbors live along the West Nishnabotna River near Highway 141.
