About Manson
Before Manson had a name, settlers around Joseph and Louisa Yates's frame house at Yatesville, three miles to the southeast, used it as post office, schoolhouse and church; when the Illinois Central finished its line from Fort Dodge to Storm Lake in 1870, those services moved up beside the tracks and a town grew there. Businesses soon shifted to the higher, drier ground north of the rails, and by 1880 about 500 people lived in the incorporated town. Manson has had to rebuild twice: in 1882 a fire took all but one building on the east side of Main Street, and on the evening of June 28, 1979, an F4 tornado tore through the middle of town, wrecking 25 of the 35 businesses and about 110 homes before neighbors pulled together to put it back. Beneath it all, some 200 feet down, lies the buried Manson impact structure, a crater about 24 miles across left by a meteorite 74 million years ago, which gave the town its old nickname, the soft water capital of the world. Today about 1,700 people call Manson home, with the Manson-Northwest Webster Cougars, the MACCenter in the former elementary school, and the water tower rising over Watertower Park and its Heritage Trail.
