About Mapleton
Mapleton began as a farm settlement on the west bank of the Maple River, platted in 1857 and named for the river beside it. When the Northwestern Railroad arrived on the east side in 1877, merchants and families picked up and moved across the water to be near the tracks, and the new town was incorporated the next spring with 188 residents. It took the plain name Mapleton in 1896, the same year townspeople dedicated a Gothic Revival and Romanesque church that is now the Museum of American History. Down a side street sits the William Ring House, built in 1865 and called the first frame house in the Maple Valley. Today about 1,165 people live here, in the foothills of the Loess Hills, with a library, a nine-hole golf course dating to 1925, and a Fourth of July parade, meal and fireworks the town looks forward to each year.
