About Maquoketa
Maquoketa got its start in 1838, when John Goodenow put up a cabin at what is now the corner of Main and Platt, right where the Davenport-to-Dubuque stage road passed through; the settlement was called Springfield until 1844, when it took the name of its river, from the Meskwaki words for Bear River. The railroad came in 1870 and the county seat followed in 1873, and the boom that came after left brick hotels and storefronts along Main Street that are now a National Register historic district. Just north of town, Alfred Hurst's four limestone kilns burned lime for builders across the Midwest starting in 1871, and the county historical society restored them in the 1980s. In 1921 the Maquoketa Women's Club bought the first land for what became Maquoketa Caves State Park, where Depression-era work crews built the trails that still lead to more caves than any other state park in Iowa has. After a 2008 fire took part of downtown, this town of about 6,100 put fresh energy into its historic core, and today folks gather at the 1904 Carnegie library, the volunteer-built Ohnward Fine Arts Center and a busy weekly calendar of chats, story times and food trucks.
