About Marengo
Marengo was laid out along the Iowa River valley in 1845, took its name from Napoleon's victory at the Battle of Marengo, and has been Iowa County's seat since that August, long before it formally incorporated in 1859. Its proudest landmark is the 1893 Iowa County Courthouse, a Romanesque Revival building of Berea sandstone whose 137-foot tower ends in an octagonal stage and a tall pointed roof unlike any other courthouse in the state; the county paid for much of it by auctioning off swampland it owned far to the northwest. In 1905 the town built a Carnegie library, and Marengo is thought to be the smallest town in the country to win a Carnegie gift for one. Belgian families who settled the area brought rolle bolle with them, and its courts are still part of town life, while the Pioneer Heritage Museum keeps log cabins, a farmhouse, a Rock Island depot and a 1930s Sinclair station. Today about 2,400 people live here, seven miles off Interstate 80, fishing and kayaking at Gateway Park and Preserve on the Iowa River and cheering on the Iowa Valley Tigers.
