About McCook
McCook was laid out in 1882 as a new railroad town halfway between Omaha and Denver, and it still keeps much of its story along one street. On Norris Avenue stand the modest home of Senator George W. Norris, who helped bring electricity to rural America and is remembered here with a state historic site, and the Sutton House, the only Frank Lloyd Wright home in Nebraska, built for the town's railroad bandleader and jeweler and his wife Eliza. A few blocks south, the 1900s Carnegie library now houses the Museum of the High Plains, with exhibits on the railroad, the World War II air base and the Indianola POW camp. Each December the avenue fills again for Noel on Norris, with carriage rides, Santa and a Christmas light parade.
