About Mediapolis
Mediapolis started in 1869 as the railroad stop serving the older settlement of Kossuth, on the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Minnesota line, and its name says exactly where it sits: 'media' for middle and 'polis' for town, halfway between Burlington and Wapello. From 1875 it was also a junction, where a branch toward Washington met the north-south tracks, and the town grew from about 400 people in 1880 to more than 800 by 1910. The railroad era ended when the Rock Island stopped running in 1980, but work never left: since 1961 the U.S. Gypsum Sperry mine, a shaft 620 feet deep two miles southwest of town, has kept people employed. Downtown, two-story brick storefronts still line Main Street between Harrison and Orchard, just around the corner from the public library on North Orchard. Today about 1,700 people call Mediapolis home, and on fall and winter nights they fill the one-campus school on Northfield Street to cheer the orange-and-black Bulldogs and Bullettes, catch the fall musical, and hear the December Vespers concert.
