About Melcher-Dallas
Melcher-Dallas began as two coal-mining towns that spent most of their history as rivals: Dallas, settled in the 1850s, and Melcher, laid out in 1913 as the mines grew. At the height of it all, the Red Rock Coal Company mine outside Melcher ranked third in Iowa and put hundreds of men to work. The last mines shut in 1952, and the towns leaned back into farming country life. In 1986 they finally became one city, and every May neighbors toast that merger, then come back in June for Coal Miners Day, a tribute to the miners who built both towns. Today the heart of town is a small square with a gazebo and playground, a library and a senior center on Main Street, and a pickaxe-and-shovel city seal that still points back to where it all started.
