About Milford
Milford grew up around a mill. Settlers drawn to the Iowa Great Lakes in the 1850s had to haul grain as far as Mankato or Fort Dodge, so after a failed try in 1861 a flour mill finally went up on Mill Creek in 1868, a sawmill followed in 1869, and in 1870 the mill company laid out a new town northwest of the little Old Town settlement. The Milwaukee Road brought mail, coal and lumber, and on summer weekends excursion trains carried visitors up from Des Moines; when the last freight left in 1976, the old rail bed became the start of the Iowa Great Lakes Trail, which runs from Milford through Arnolds Park and Okoboji to Spirit Lake. East of town stands the Gerome Clark House, built of the many-colored glacial stones a pioneer family cleared from its fields and finished in 1888. Today about 3,300 people call Milford home, the southern gateway to the lakes, where Okoboji's high school Pioneers, Memorial Park's ball diamonds and the Milford Memorial Library's storytimes keep the town busy all year.
