About Minatare
Minatare began as a dream of surveyor George W. Fairfield, who liked the water and soil here better than anywhere else he had mapped and in 1885 filed a claim for a town he called Tabor, little more than a sod post office, a general store and a few houses. Its first settlers dug their own future: in 1887 they formed the Minatare Canal & Irrigation Company, the first such project in the area, with the Harshman family alone digging more than half the ditch, and water first ran through it on August 15, 1888. When the Burlington Railroad came through in 1900 and missed Tabor, the town picked itself up, moved to the tracks and took the name Minatare, said to mean "clear water." A sugar factory built in 1926 brought busy shops and a peak in the 1940s, and the high school went up the same year; sugar beets, beans, corn and cattle still fill the fields around town. Just north sits Lake Minatare, where a 55-foot stone lighthouse built by the Veterans Conservation Corps in 1939 stands far from any sea. Today about 700 people call Minatare home, halfway between Chimney Rock and Scotts Bluff National Monument.
