About Minden
Minden grew from open prairie in 1876, the year Kearney County settlers voted 165 to 67 to move the courthouse here from Lowell. In 1915, City Light Commissioner J.C. Haws strung colored lights for a veterans' convention that weather canceled. He hung them around the courthouse square for Christmas instead, and Minden has been the Christmas City ever since. Each holiday season, neighbors act out 'The Light of the World' pageant on the sides of the square, ending as more than 12,000 bulbs light the courthouse. On the edge of town, Harold Warp, who grew up on a homestead about nine miles away, opened Pioneer Village in 1953, and it now holds more than 50,000 objects from 1830 onward.
