About Missouri Valley
Families from Tennessee were farming the hollows here by 1848, and in 1856 a little settlement called St. John's took root where three rail lines would one day meet. When the wildcat banks failed in 1858 and the tracks drew close, folks picked up the town, moved it about two miles, and soon renamed it for the broad valley of the Missouri River. The Chicago and North Western reached it in 1867, and Missouri Valley became a true railroad town, with the Sioux City and Pacific's shops and roundhouse and, by 1896, some 25 passenger trains a day. Union Pacific coal trains still roll through town, past brick storefronts on the Lincoln Highway that include an 1884 bank. Just up Highway 30, the Harrison County Historical Village keeps a log cabin, a general store and a one-room school, and the Loess Hills and DeSoto refuge are a short drive away.
