About Mitchell
Mitchell started in 1900, when the Burlington railroad pushed west to this spot in the North Platte valley, and it took its name from old Fort Mitchell, the 1860s army post that guarded the trail near Scotts Bluff. A sugar factory built in 1920 kept beet growers busy for generations, and Sandford Hall, the dance hall dedicated in 1934, brought big bands like Glenn Miller's and Benny Goodman's to town. Today the Scotts Bluff County Fair fills the grounds just west of town each summer, and every Halloween the chamber turns Center Avenue into a Trunk or Treat.
