About Mitchellville
Mitchellville traces back to Thomas Mitchell, a New Hampshire farm boy who put up a log cabin beside Camp Creek in 1844 to serve travelers, the first home in Polk County outside the fort at Des Moines, and later paid a teacher out of his own pocket to run the township's first school. He helped lay out a town in 1856, then platted a new one in 1867 along the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific line, where grain elevators soon shipped hundreds of thousands of bushels of corn and wheat. Mitchell, an abolitionist who kept a station on the Underground Railroad, gave the town a Universalist church in 1868 modeled on small New England meetinghouses, now its oldest documented building and listed on the National Register, and a three-story seminary with a mansard tower in 1872 that the state later turned into a girls' school. His cabin ground south of town is now Thomas Mitchell Park, an oak-and-hickory ridge where families camp, picnic and hike. Today about 2,500 people call Mitchellville home, a short drive east of Des Moines, with a city park full of ball diamonds, a disc golf course and shelters, a public library on Center Avenue, and Thomas Mitchell Days every September.
