About Monona
Two brothers from Vermont, Phineas Page and David Olmsted, crossed the Mississippi in July 1840 and walked ten miles inland to a high rolling prairie with timber groves and a good spring, and that spot became Monona. The town was meant to be called Winona, but a Minnesota namesake got in the way, so the settlers chose an Indian name instead, the only one among Clayton County towns. Churches, a school and a post office came first, and the railroad's arrival in March 1864 kept the hilltop town alive and growing. Today people know it as the Garden City, with a family aquatic center, three parks and the Butterfly Gardens and Trails that volunteers built bridge by bridge. The Monona Historical Museum keeps a turn-of-the-century home full of period furnishings, wood carvings and the largest known display of hand-carved chains, and the Murphy Helwig Library hosts a monthly silent book club.
