About Monroe
Monroe's story starts in 1843, when Adam Tool, William Highland and their neighbors claimed homesteads on the prairie of southern Jasper County and called the spot Tool's Point; the Highlands raised the first log home, and early Methodist services met in the Tool house. Tool laid out a town in 1851, and by its incorporation in 1867 the settlement had taken the name Monroe, though a city park still carries the old Tool's Point name. Just northeast of town, the 1892 Red Bridge, a rare nineteenth-century Warren truss built by local contractor H.S. Efnor, spans the South Skunk River and survived a hard flood in 1947. In town, a two-story brick block lines Main Street, and the eight-sided H. A. Kling Residence was photographed for the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1934. Today close to 2,000 neighbors live where Highways 14 and 163 cross, cheering on the PCM Mustangs, borrowing from the Monroe Public Library on Buchanan Street and walking its Story Walk past the water tower and Red Rock Park.
