About Montezuma
Montezuma began in 1848, when Mexican-American War veterans named their new settlement for the Aztec emperor Moctezuma II, and it soon became the Poweshiek County seat. Early on it was a stop on the stagecoach road between Iowa City and Des Moines, and later a railroad town. The county's Greek Revival courthouse of 1859, red brick with a white bell tower and dome, still anchors the square, and its lawn is now ringed with monuments, including a Bill of Rights marker and the All Veterans Memorial. Around the square sit a 1892 hotel, a 1918 Carnegie library that houses the historical society, and an old 1913 jail that became the county museum. Just outside town, Diamond Lake Park has been the pride of Montezuma since 1953, with hiking trails, camping and family programs. About 1,400 neighbors live here, and the first Saturday of December still brings Breakfast with Santa and a tree lighting on the square.
