About Monticello
Monticello traces its start to 1836, when Daniel Varvel founded the settlement on the high ground near the Maquoketa River, and it grew into a working town known early on for its industry. By 1871 the Odd Fellows had put up a narrow brick Italianate hall on West 1st Street, still the best-kept commercial building of its era downtown, and a few blocks away Civil War officer Sewall Farwell's house went up in 1868. Just outside town, a farmer and his son laid up a three-arch stone bridge over Deer Creek in 1893 that four generations of their family kept in repair. In 1950 the Methodists finished St. Luke's, the only Iowa church by the Boston firm Cram & Ferguson, and today it lives on as the Monticello Heritage and Cultural Center. Each July the Great Jones County Fair fills the grounds with 4-H barns, racing and big concerts, drawing close to 100,000 visitors, and the rest of the year families paddle the Maquoketa, climb at Pictured Rocks and gather at the library and Renaissance Center.
