About Morrill
Morrill's story starts in 1886, when a handful of families from Fort Collins, Colorado, staked claims where Sheep Creek draw opens onto the valley and named their little settlement Collins after the home they had left. After a few dry summers they dug an eight-mile irrigation ditch by hand with shovels, a team and a slip, and the later Tri-State Canal followed that same line. When the Burlington railroad arrived around 1900, Charles Henry Morrill of the Lincoln Land Company laid out a new townsite less than a mile south, and the canal-building boom of 1905 filled it with a boarding house, a blacksmith shop and a mercantile before the village incorporated in 1907. Potatoes made Morrill a busy shipping point in the 1920s, and a local experiment with dry beans in 1923 grew into a bean business that still carries on in town. Today about 930 neighbors share a brick-front Center Avenue with a hardware store and the American Legion hall, a public library on East Webster Street, and the Morrill Lions schools.
